Katie Scott unleashes her creativity with our latest colour release

We invited interior designer Katie Scott, founder of Sticks + Stones Design, to design an exciting new kitchen concept showcasing the latest Laminex Formica Laminate decors.

‘I looked to create a design with style and elegance, and use the products in a luxurious way while still being affordable,’ says Katie. Choosing the versatile L-shape kitchen, she then applied colour and texture to express three functional areas – the bar, cooking and serving area, and scullery. From early morning breakfast to afterschool homework to evening cocktails, it offers true versatility.

Katie has explored the design potential of the products to define character and space. Beautiful curves on the island bench and door archways bring sculptural qualities to this kitchen design. Laminex Formica Laminate, a high-pressure laminate (HPL), can be cut to a gentle curve, with matching edgetape to create a seamless look. And with six of the new HPL decors also available in Melteca, bench colours can be continued in the vertical cabinetry.

Designating spaces through materials and tones

Katie has used light and dark tones to define the various functions within the kitchen. The central cooking and serving area features the luminous Laminex Formica Laminate Carrara Delicata and Porcelain Blush. And to frame the space, the bar and scullery wall are lined in the moody Laminex Formica Laminate Black Birchply. This light and dark colour contrast is a classic combination, freshened up with the soft pink tones of these new decors.

The marble veining of Carrara Delicata is as delicate as the name suggests and is used for the benchtops and splashback. ‘Every New Zealander grew up with either a high-pressure laminate or stainless-steel kitchen benchtop. So it was fun to bring fresh eyes to the new HPL range and use the product in different and innovative ways,’ says Katie.

‘I started the design with the Porcelain Blush, applying it to the island base and the upper cabinetry. The Carrara finish pairs beautifully with the soft Blush. Together they are such a lovely fresh colour combination… the Black Birchply provides a strong contrasting element – an absolutely classic look – to give the kitchen that glamour and sophistication.’

Curvaceous shapes with copper detailing

Curved forms can be seen throughout the design. The island acts as a functional art object, with concealed lighting to highlight and emphasise the curved Carrara Delicata front. A feature glass pendant light by SØKTAS brings focus and intimacy to the bar area.

‘Most of the detailing – the taps, lighting and cabinetry handles – are made from copper, which adds warmth and luxury to the design,’ says Katie. ‘The handles are custom-made because of their length, and the herringbone floor adds a sense of timelessness to the whole look.’
