Anita and Rogan live with their youngest son Lincoln in Pōkeno, fifty kilometres south of Auckland, in a beautiful 1940’s villa on a five acre plot, but the lifestyle indoors reveals something less Zen.

This beautiful 1940’s villa with a 140 square metre footprint, has an unusual layout with the kitchen tucked away at the back of the house and the dining is directly off it, creating a major disconnect from the lounge and outdoor entertainment area. There are three good sized bedrooms, but the master bedroom is directly off the lounge, allowing for zero privacy. There were opportunities for improvement to create a space that would meet the demands of this family to create some ever lasting memories.

The renovation plan involved moving the kitchen to where the master bedroom is and create a dining area where the large living is by knocking out the wall that sat between bedroom and lounge. The master bedroom goes where the kitchen and dining was, with the existing bathroom becoming a walk-in wardrobe and an ensuite - creating a lovely private space. The laundry, which was outside, needed to come inside.

“Being able to design a large, new kitchen with the latest Laminex product and amazing Bosch appliances was a dream come true and this kitchen is my favourite”, says Alex Walls. I decided to go with the Melteca Melamine Planked Urban Oak in Naturale finish for all of the kitchen cabinetry. The warm, rustic feel that this product emanates, sits perfectly within the Smith's 1940's home, but brings a modern twist. Complimenting the cabinetry and giving the aesthetic a more luxe feel, are the Laminam Porcelain Ultra Pietra Di Savoia Perla benchtops. Sturdy but beautiful, they feel very sophisticated, yet look right at home in the rural environment.

Integrated into the kitchen renovation are the super stylish Bosch appliances. “Going with a dark gun metal grey Series 6 French Door Bottom Freezer, I knew that Anita and Rogan would finally have the space they need to store all of the food required for entertaining friends and family - and that's something they do a lot of,” says Alex.

The kitchen that we designed and built for the Smith's is in complete contrast to their previous kitchen. It is now the heart of the home with all modern, top of the range products and appliances. It is not just beautiful, it is also large and comfortable with a functional layout and has easy access to the outdoor entertainment area. This kitchen is going to provide the Smith's with many wonderful meals and memories.
